This freezing spell that recently hit the Vancouver, Battle Ground Wa area did quite a number on many peoples plumbing systems. We had many freeze breaks hit the area. It really exposed where our plumbing systems may have not been properly insulated. Most of the breaks we ran into were on the lines going out to the garage hosebibs since many garage walls seem to be inadequetely insulated for the plumbing lines. If you have a shut off already for these garage lines it would be a good idea to put it to use during the winter freezing weather. I have ran across quite a few people that have them but they never knew what they were for. Many times if you have a water heater in the garage the shut off for the garage hosebib is located somewhere above the water heater. (Not the shut-off that goes directly to the water heater) Also it may not be a bad idea if you had to cut sheet rock to fix a break, to add a shut off to the line if you don't have one or better yet to upgrade the line to pex piping. Pex piping is made to be able to expand so if it freezes it will just expand rather than break the pipe. We tend to not be as prepared for the cold weather since southwest Washington Vancouver area has such a mild climate, but it does come around everyonce in awhile.
